Many students think they have to land a job before they can learn what a career is really like. In reality, one of the best ways to explore a profession is by having an informational interview, which is a conversation with someone already working in the field. It's not a job interview; it's an opportunity to ask about their career path, daily responsibilities, challenges, and advice for someone just starting out.

Start Small, Learn More

When reaching out to a professional, ask if they have 10 minutes to spare rather than requesting a longer meeting. A shorter request feels more manageable and makes it easier for busy professionals to say yes. Prepare 2–3 thoughtful questions that comfortably fit into those 10 minutes, but have 5 questions ready in case the conversation flows naturally and they choose to keep talking. Many conversations end up lasting 20 minutes or more simply because both people are engaged.

Start with teachers, family friends, alumni, or professionals in your community.
